Interview time!

Hello all! Today we meet with inspiring artist Diana.

When did you first started making art?

I was born in the family of painters. I grew up in this atmosphere with brush, pencil and canvas. The Louvre have some of my grandfather’s paintings. Many years later my daughter was studying and drawing in the Louvre…
I cannot imagine another way of living… I think that one can make art his whole life. It’s just a question of choice what exactly one would do.

What is the main difference between art and craft? Is there a craft without art or the opposite?

When you put your soul in your craft, it is already a piece of art. In the same time the world is full with crafters “painters”… I think it’s in the relations with the things we do. We have the power to make it craft or art.

What kinds of art do you do right now?

My soul is in the art… I love working with textile and other materials. I’m always experimenting.
Two weeks ago I moved from Bulgaria to Singapore. Everything is new and different. A whole new world… And this will lead to a whole new way of expressing myself through art.

Tell us more about the clutches you make.

Yes, I will tell you about the little official clutches. They are very inspiring for me. They take time and efforts, but the pleasure I feel while making a new plastic is unlike anything other. Many of those complex designs are not shown on the photos, they are individual orders. When I see a beautiful material I instantly get the image of the future design. And I am restless until I finish it. When I work I disappear, I’m not there – there are only inspiration and joy. I don’t know if I can put it into words… It’s difficult to explain, but that’s the truth.

Is there any other way you get inspired?

Only God is an Artist. I’m a tool in his hands. I love when God plays through me! Inspiration is everywhere. It’s in the falling leaf and in the smile of a kid. In two eyes in love and in the bright stars... in the little grass and in the flight of the eagle... and in the running wolf...

Do you use a special technology for you clutches?

The technology itself is not at all difficult. I make the design from textile and with hundreds little invisible stitches I finish it. I can guarantee its strength and long life.
We are learning all the time. There are lots of different technologies. I also use special technics in my paintings and pillows for meditation.

Thank you for this interview!

Thanks for the invite! I’ll be glad if I was of any help. I wish all our readers joy and health! And be very inspired!

Interview with Ralitza Dimtrova - zolayka

Meet one very talented girl from our team - Ralitza Dimitrova - zolayka. Her shop is right here.

Tell us about you. What are your passions and inspirations?

My name is Ralitza, I’m a single mom, meeting people maniac, working musician :-) My passions are…ops – really can’t answer this, coz I find passion and inspiration in almost everything. Sometimes getting really excited about small things, other time ignoring the whole world – everything depends on my mood.

Please tell us something about your art. Why exactly crochet?

What I expose in ETSY is just part of my world. I started to crochet for ETSY, coz lately I was knitting too much and needed something fresh for the start as a seller in ETSY. So I just picked up the crochet, but I haven’t given up on all the other things I love to do. Actually it’s hard to say why exactly crochet – just like that! Nothing special behind it :-)

In your work we can see both modern-looking and traditional designs; both colorful and monochrome compositions. It’s clear your mind is drifting in various directions. Is it difficult to experiment without losing your “signature”?

As I said before – it’s all about the mood. That’s why I’m drifting :-) The traditional designed stuff were the first my mother and aunt taught me to do, I was a little girl and I wanted to do what the women in my family are doing. So naturally – traditional knitting and crochet are the first experience. My mother’s still keeping my first knitted doily – such a free form interpretation :-) but we’re learning the whole life, aren’t we? Now , with the time it’s easier to experiment, coz I have a solid basic to start from….but still I need inspiration for to start a new project….often taking me long time to find the perfect shape that works for me. Searching through your ideas and getting the ideas completed as an item ready to show up – is the actual creating – the rest is business :-)

I would like us to talk about your tablecloths. Can you tell us something about this workmanship? How did you first started those designs?Listing

My mother and aunt were knitting these tablecloths since I was really little girl. They had a small women family business at the sea side – very successful I could tell. These tablecloths are done by following a certain pattern, often written by words and as far as I know they are very popular in Greece, Bulgaria and some parts of West Europe. I was thought to do this by the women in my family and I was very excited at the beginning but later found it kind of boring, coz you’re really not free to experiment with different shapes and designs until you were knitting these tablecloths whole your life. My aunt is making her own designs now, even being a 78 years old. To me it’s still a challenge :-) But can you imagine for these patterns to appear there must have been some really passionate lady to create them, hope one day I’ll be one of them.

What is the creative process for making those? How much time does one usually take to finish?

It all depends of the pattern, but it’s not quick knitting. The work is getting huge at some point and there are thousands of stitches to knit off. It’s not really creative, as I said above, it’s more about precision. The longer I was knitting a huge tablecloth – about 2 meters in diameter (80 inches) and it took me forever – whole month – following the pattern, trying to not get lost or do some mistake, coz raveling is a horrible thing to do :

There are a lot of flower and nature motifs in them. Why is that?

Have no idea! I guess coz flowers are beautiful. I guess coz the women making the pattern love the nature and were trying to bring the nature into the house through their creations.

Thank you very much for introducing us in this beautiful world!

You’re welcome :-)

How to start your own business

If you want to start your own business selling hand-made items, the most important thing is to talk to people with experience. That's why I collected a few advices from our group.

Listing

Antoniya Koleva has a passion for crochet and comic books. Her shop combines delicate doilies, fun decoupage bracelets and signs for home decoration. Here's what she says:
Failing to plan is planning to fail. Create short and long terms measurable goals and stick to them (it's harder than it sounds, I tell you from my own experience :) )

Listing

Nevena Avramova is owner of two etsy shops: one for great hand painted glass and one for accessories. (they definitely are a conversational starter!). These are her thoughts on the subject:
If you find you're talented, do not think it will make you rich right away. First you work for your talent - and then it does the same for you! Handmade doesn't mean made in primary school arts classеs. You plan on starting your own business? Think if you can afford it. It's very expensive.

Listing

In her spare time, Elena Kozareva is a designer. She makes amazing dresses and accessories for tango and/or other dances. Start with some tests on your work, she says. For example, I am a very passionate tango dancer myself and so it took me quite some time to see which designs and materials are best for tango. Only after that I was confident enough to start my own business. Test your items in various situations.

Diana Radeva is oh so very talanted. She makes clutches and bags, mandalas, necklaces, scarves and brooches. Here are her advices for Etsy:
First, take a good look on the cite. Do a research of the items sold on Etsy. Consider the opportunities - what do you do, what can you do, what you love doing. What is the thing you're great at. Than, for starters, decide on one or two options for manufacture. Decide how many finances you can invest. Considering all this, organize your Etsy shop. It's good if you develop it in one direction or in a few similar ones. To start on Etsy, you'll need: 1. a Visa Electron card; 2. a PayPal account. To start your business, you'll need: 1. to make a detailed and well thought-of plan; 2. to prepare a few items to start with; 3. to make photos of your items; 4. to write a good description of your items. And something for the photos. I'll say it again: research the cite and learn from the best. The photo of your item should be beautiful, with a nice composition and it should be easy to see what exactly you're selling. Make it realistic. You can accomlish this after a few hours of shooting. Don't make it look like a Hollywood production. It's really important to keep them real and beautiful... Good luck.

What are your advices?

Etsy Crafts Party, 10 June 2011 - Sofia /

We expected a fine sunny weather, but actually it was freezing! It was the first big team meeting in Sofia.
We had so much fun - maybe not all night, but almost. :-)

11 / Color Trends SS'11

[English version below]
---

Hi,

Here in a few pics are the color trends for spring / summer '11:

Fresh, saturated, bright colors. Cobalt blue, green, fuchsia, orange, red. Brave combination (fuchsia and red, orange and pink, blue with green). Neon colors are particularly relevant for those who have the courage to afford it.

For jewelry: big, bright, bold. Gold takes precedence over silver.

We wish you all a colorful summer with watermelon flavor!

DIY flower garland tutorial - begginer level

This a very simple project how to make crochet flower garland. It includes 1 flower pattern and one leaf pattern. You can make a pretty decoration for your home or garden.
